Confronting the Community

The next day, during breakfast, Javier decided to plant the idea. “You know, Maria, since Clara has been organizing events around the neighborhood, do you think you might want to join in more actively?”

She looked up from her plate, intrigued. “What do you mean? You think I should get involved?”

“Yeah! It might be a good way to create better ties with the community. You know how people talk about wanting good neighbors. Plus, it’s always nice to stay connected with friendly faces,” he suggested, trying to keep his tone light and encouraging.

Maria smiled, the idea clearly resonating with her. “You’re right! I’ve been meaning to do that anyway. It would be good for the kids to socialize, too.”

“But not too much involvement with the gossip. Just keep it casual,” he added, albeit hesitantly as the reality of their interactions loomed in his mind.

“I’ll be cautious. I don’t want to get caught up in unnecessary drama,” she assured him, her eyes sparkling with enthusiasm.

As the day wore on, Javier felt a flicker of hope begin to build within him. If Maria became more immersed in community events, it would keep the neighborhood’s attention on her and potentially divert any scrutiny away from him and Sharla.
