Chapter 52 Digital Deceptions

The Confrontation with Maria

That evening, after an agonizing internal debate, Javier prepared to confront Maria. He could feel the clamoring voices in his mind, a combination of fear and resolve amongst them, as he waited for the right moment.

When the kids were settled in bed and the house settled into an intimate quiet, he took a deep breath, the air seeming to thicken with every heartbeat.

“Maria,” he called as they settled into the living room. “Can we talk?”

“Sure! What’s on your mind?” she replied cheerfully, taking a seat beside him.

“Um…” he started, words faltering as he searched for a way to express the unease brewing in his chest. “I wanted to bring up something that’s been bothering me.”

She turned to him, her brow slightly furrowing in concern. “Is it about work? I know you mentioned feeling stressed.”

“Kind of,” he said, the weight of honesty twisting within him. “But it’s more about our neighbors—their chatter. I’ve heard some things… rumors. I don’t want you to worry.”

Maria’s expression shifted slowly, confusion replacing the initial cheer. “Rumors? What do you mean?”

He took a deep breath, focusing on maintaining his tone earnest but steady. “I’ve heard whispers from some neighbors about—well, some casual talk suggesting relationships might be not what they seem in our community. They were linked to my interactions with others, and I worried it might come back to you.”

“What do you mean 'linked to your interactions'?” Maria pressed, her voice tightening with suspicion.

“Just neighbors are a bit overzealous with their imaginations. It’s probably nothing — people joke, gossip about silly things. But in this case, I felt it was important to let you know, in case you heard anything,” he plowed ahead, trying to keep the focus on lighthearted drama while wrestling with the truth of what he wasn’t saying.

“You’re saying this because of who I saw you with, right?” Maria asked, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Was it Sharla?”

Javier’s heart raced as he tried to gauge her tone. “Sharla? Yes, she’s been around. But only as a neighbor—helping with community events.”

“Javier,” Maria said, leaning in, her gaze intense. “I appreciate your honesty. But if you’re feeling off about your relationships or any whispers, just tell me. You don’t need to hide from me. I just don’t want something that’s not true to come between us.”

Javier swallowed, desperately trying to weigh his next words carefully. “I don’t think you should worry. We’re fine, and I’m here for you.”

Maria shook her head slightly, her expression softened but still wary. “You understand how important transparency is, right? If there’s anything you need to share, I want you to feel comfortable doing so.”

Javier felt the walls inching closer, the gust of truth threatening to spill over. “I promise to keep you in the loop—just, please don’t concern yourself with the gossip.”

The weight in her eyes showed understanding yet tolerance of the underlying tension, but he sensed the questions still simmering underneath the surface. She nodded slowly, but the flicker of doubt remained clear in her eyes. “Okay. But if anything changes—or if you feel like there’s something else happening—promise me you’ll talk to me.”

“I promise,” he said, though internally he felt a storm brewing, an impending harbinger of chaos lurking just out of grasp.
