Chapter 46 Digital Deceptions

The Confrontation Geared Up

Once inside, he found Maria pleasantly preparing snacks for the kids. “Who was that?” she asked, glancing up from her work.

“Oh, just Tom, chatting about the community event and some gossip,” Javier replied lightly, but the change in Maria’s demeanor was immediate, her interest sharpening.

“Gossip? About what?” Maria pressed, setting down the bowl of snacks.

“Nothing too substantial, just typical neighborly talk,” he deflected, attempting to mask the undercurrents of anxiety that threatened to spiral.

“Unusual, right?” Maria’s brow furrowed lightly, the thread of suspicion coloring her tone. “I don’t want to get caught up in drama. Could it have anything to do with us?”

Feeling the tension rise, Javier quickly altered his approach. “It’s just a figure of speech. You know how people are. But I’m here, and I intend to stay present for you and the kids. That’s what matters.”

Maria’s trust seemed unwavering, but he couldn’t shake the weight of doubt. The gossip that flitted in and out of their lives had begun to wrap around them. The tighter it grew, the more it pressed against him.

“I still hate feeling like we’re part of some kind of neighborhood spectacle. Can’t we just live our lives without it affecting us?!” Maria exclaimed, her frustration boiling just beneath the surface.

Javier sighed deeply, wanting more than anything to turn back time—to go back to the simplicity of before all this began. “We can’t control what others say or think. We just have to live authentically while we can,” he said, trying to soothe the growing tension.

“I just want to make sure we address any potential issues if there are real questions,” she replied, crossing her arms defensively. “We need to remain honest with each other. You know I always want you to feel like you can confide.”

Her insistence tugged at his heartstrings, grounding him amidst the chaos.

“Maria, I promise, I will talk to you about anything that’s bothering me,” he said, his voice softening as he met her gaze. “I just really want to avoid unnecessary drama right now. We’re a family, and that’s what matters most.”

She nodded slowly, though he could see the flicker of concern still lingering behind her eyes. “Okay,” she replied, though her tone held a note of uncertainty. “Just remember that I’m here, and I want to help you through anything—don’t forget that.”

“I won’t,” he promised, though inside, a pang of guilt twisted in him like a knife. Every reassurance felt like a window into a life he was trying desperately to preserve, even as he concealed the part of himself that craved something more.
