Chapter 42 Digital Deceptions

The Confrontation with Maria

Javier returned to find the house quiet, and Maria in the living room reading. As he entered, she looked up, a smile breaking across her face. “You’re back! How did it go?”

“It went well. Just helping Sharla prepare for a community event,” he said, maintaining a casual air. The words felt like a fragile stitch connecting the truth with the seamless lies he had been weaving.

“Good to hear,” Maria replied, eyes searching his, unreadable emotions flickering beneath the surface. “Did she mention anything about that neighborhood chatter?”

“That she’s heard some—people chatting as usual,” he deflected skillfully, keeping his tone light to mask the swirling thoughts inside. “Just strikes me as typical rumors; you know how neighbors can be.”

Maria’s smile faded slightly, a flicker of concern taking over. “Yeah, but it’s still a bit unsettling, don’t you think? I just want us to be cautious.”

“I know,” he reassured her, stepping closer instinctively. “But Sharla’s excited about the event; it’s a light in all this noise.”

“I trust you,” she said, a hint of uncertainty creeping into her voice. “Just—just keep being honest with me, okay?”

“Absolutely,” he promised, though inside, his heart raced, the conflicting emotions roiling within him.

As night fell, Javier dreaded the conversation he now had to navigate with Maria. They wound down for the evening, settling into a semblance of comfort, while Javier felt the pressing urge to remain accessible and transparent.
