Chapter 37 Digital Deceptions

The Crash

Then came one stormy evening, the sky unleashing a torrent of rain as Javier settled down after a long day. He received a chilling text from Sharla: “I ran into someone I didn’t expect. The neighbor who asked about us? They were talking to Maria at the café today.”

His heart dropped, panic drilling through him. “What did they say?” he typed back urgently.

“They seemed suspicious. Maria asked me directly if I knew you. This doesn’t look good, Javier. We may need to think quickly.”

The room spun as dread coursed through his veins. He thought of Maria, her soft smile, and the unmistakable friendship they had cherished.

“Did you reveal anything?” he continued, horrified at the thought of their conversations unspooling in the light of day.

“Not a thing. I played it cool,” Sharla replied. “But I think we’ve reached a critical point. If Maria starts to connect the dots, we could be in real trouble. We need to move fast and come up with a plan before it gets out of hand.”

Javier’s heart raced as he considered the implications of her words. “What do you suggest? I can’t let Maria find out. Not now, not ever.”

“Let’s see if we can turn the conversation around,” Sharla proposed, urgency threading through her voice. “Maybe I can reach out to her casually. If she thinks I'm just a friendly neighbor, I can assure her that everything is fine.”

“Are you sure that’s safe?” he replied, skepticism mingling with fear. “What if she catches on? I can’t risk that.”

“It’s a calculated risk, but we have to act swiftly. The longer we wait, the tighter the noose will get. We can’t let people start asking questions.”

Javier rubbed the back of his neck, feeling the weight of their decisions press down like a physical burden. He wanted to say yes—to trust her judgment and take this bold step together—but the thought of the potential fallout left him on edge.

“Alright,” he finally agreed, heart pounding. “But let’s make sure you only mention me in passing. Keep it light. I’d rather have you keep the distance until we can determine how deep the suspicions go.”

“Understood. I’ll text you as soon as I can.”

As they ended the conversation, Javier felt a mixture of anxiety and reluctant determination flood through him. The storm outside mirrored the tempest brewing within, a constant reminder that every second mattered, and their web of secrets was growing more delicate by the hour.
