Chapter 20, Digital Deceptions

 Post-Meeting Conflict

Days passed, and Javier followed Sharla’s advice, maintaining the charade of family life while keeping a cautious distance from their secret meetings. Every text became a high-stakes operation, light-hearted exchanges carefully crafted around the idea of friendship, masking the deeper emotional current that flowed underneath.

But every moment of easy laughter with his family began to feel like a fraught stretch of rope—one wrong move, one slip of the tongue, and he risked tumbling into chaos.

That weekend, as Maria and the kids prepared for their getaway, Javier felt a ping of guilt. The idea of a family trip—an attempt to rekindle their bond—paired with the emotional chaos of his burgeoning relationship with Sharla, felt contradictory.

As they drove to their beach cottage, Lucas and Sofia chattered excitedly about games and the adventures waiting ahead. Javier smiled, forcing down the tumult of thoughts threatening to bubble over, but as the cottage came into view, he was met with fresh anxiety.

Weekend Away with the Family

Settling into their temporary home brought familial warmth, but it was laden with his ongoing internal conflict. Over the next few days, Javier reveled in playful moments with the kids, while Maria busied herself in the kitchen, crafting communal meals that held air of nostalgia. He should have felt comfort fully within their embrace, yet the joy was often tinged with the heaviness of his dual existence.

One evening, as they sat around the dining table, laughter echoing in the cozy space, Maria turned to him, her expression suddenly serious. “Javier, I really appreciate you being present. It feels nice to have us all together again.”

“Of course!” he replied, his voice overly cheerful, masking the anxiety simmering below the surface. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Their dinner was filled with light-hearted conversations and shared stories, but every moment he felt the insistent tug of duty to Sharla nagging at the back of his mind. The tension escalated as he uneasily balanced family time with the growing longing for their clandestine exchanges.

Later that night, after the kids were asleep, Javier poured himself a glass of wine, feeling the need to unwind. Maria stepped into the living room, visibly tired but still radiant. “Hey, can we talk? Just a quick chat?”

“Of course!” he said, trying to sound casual while his heart raced.

“I was thinking we could do something special tomorrow. Maybe take a family hike or visit a local festival?” she suggested, her eyes bright with excitement. “I want to make the most of this weekend.”

He felt the pulse of guilt spiking again at the idea of skipping time with the kids when the festival would run directly into the time he had tentatively arranged with Sharla. “Sure, that sounds good!” he said, forcing enthusiasm into his voice.

“Great! I thought you might want to try your hand at some of the booths, and I know the kids would find it amazing,” she replied, her excitement contagious.

As Maria’s enthusiasm swelled, Javier’s stomach twisted. “Yeah, whatever you think! I mean, we can adjust our plans as needed.” He offered half-heartedly, thoughts tangled in conflict over how to balance this moment.

“Perfect! I love it when you join in,” Maria beamed, taking a sip of her wine and smiling at him affectionately. He felt the warmth in her gaze but also the restraint of keeping secrets, and an unsettling moment of honesty swept through him.

“I just… want you to know that I'm really glad we’re here together,” he muttered, trying to convey sincerity through the mountain of opacity he had built around himself.

“Me too,” she murmured softly, her eyes glimmering with tenderness. “I love the time we take as a family.”
