Chapter 18, Digital Deceptions

The Breaking Point

Days turned into weeks, and Javier found himself stretched thin against the façade of his double life. While he managed to coordinate moments with Sharla—a spontaneous coffee here, a shared meal there—always tucked in the shadows, he felt the noose tightening around both relationships.

One afternoon in particular, while engaging in friendly banter at a family park gathering, Maria caught him off guard. She had invited a few others from their social circle and, amidst the laughter and casual chatter, she asked him pointedly, “So, who’s this Sharla? The woman who was with you at the beach?”

Javier’s heart plummeted, and time seemed to freeze around him. “What do you mean?” he stammered, feigning nonchalance as waves of panic crashed over him.

“I’ve heard her name come up a few times when people talk about you and your new friend at the resort. Oddly familiar, don’t you think?” Maria's voice laced with an undertone of suspicious observation.

“Um, yeah, it’s just a coincidence. She’s someone who just happened to be there. Nothing serious,” Javier deflected quickly, the words tasting bitter as they left his mouth.

“Well, if she ends up being a good friend of yours, I would like to meet her properly,” Maria said, her gaze steady and unwavering as if she were searching for cracks in his facade.

“Definitely, I can introduce you,” Javier replied, forcing a casualness that felt increasingly impossible. “She’s still here on vacation, so I’m sure we can all get together.”

Maria nodded, but Javier could see the flicker of doubt in her eyes. It hung there like a silent accusation, and as the laughter around them continued, he felt the pressure mounting.
